Benjamin - Baby's First Year Portraits

    I
t is so fun that I am doing this post right after the last... the last one being a wedding couple from 2006, starting their Baby's First Year documentation, and this one being a wedding couple from 2007, ending their Baby's First Year. And, since I was in the nostalgic mood in the last post, I feel compelled to not just link to the ancient blog posts, but to post a few along with Benjamin's First Year Portrait... as a story of all the sweet times I have had the true honor to document the Smaldone family. I feel like I really know Allison & Rob, as our sessions are never just the hour of shooting... they usually last a few hours since we gab about life and (now) babies. And, I love that! I love it when clients become friends! Anyway, i could go on and on about Allie and Rob, but the to-do list is long and pictures are more fun to see than words. So... happy viewing, friends!!

engagement portraits (March 2007)... they were my very first clients that I took to John Brown Farm in Lake Placid, NY. It quickly became a favorite spot.

wedding day- May 26, 2007 in Utica, NY. It was a perfect day!

oh, and of course, my VERY first "trash the dress" bride (back when that was all the rave- i think it has fizzled out now and people just stick to Day After with bride and groom and don't really trash the dress, right?). Anyway, it was super fun!! Allie had a discount dress to trash, and we spent hours doing so!

next up... Ben in the belly! April 2009. (Allie is preggers again- about 6 months- one gorgeous pregnant lady!!)

newborn... June 2009. I didn't think i was going to be able to do Baby's First Year for the Smaldones since they live in NJ and we lived in the Adirondacks, but I think they just couldn't bring themselves to hiring another photographer... so, we met halfway in Saratoga Springs (both with a baby in tow- yes, the one time I felt I could bring my baby to a shoot). :-)

Benjamin at 6 months! Wow! He changed so drastically! I remember being shocked that he was already crawling! I was able to make it to their home in NJ for this one.

and... finally... to the meaning of this post... Benjamin at 1 year. Such a fun boy! We all met up at The Treehouse Cafe (watch out, that link has music that starts up immediately) in Chestnut Hill, PA. We had to do most of the shoot indoors since it was the middle of the day, and this was a fun spot, though dodging other kids and trying not to get in anyone's way was a little challenging since it isn't a huge place. :-) But, I love these colors! and what a fun sink!

this play area has been brought to you by Purell. haha! Ben is teething a bit, so A LOT of things went in his mouth (fortunately, they have a bag to deposit such toys into).

    love it!

why, thank you, Ben! that was just the toy I wanted!

    fun times with daddy!

puppy dog eyes. watch out, girls! ;-)

i love baby toes... even toddler toes that have been all over the place.

    Allie, full of joy!

i love this next one, a lot.

    weeee!

we went outside for a few. the sun was strong, but we managed to find some good spots with some shade. LOVE this one of Ben on his dad's shoulders, even though you can't see Rob. He looks SO big!

and a favorite toy/game to close.

What an honor to watch you grow, Ben! I look forward to photographing the rest of your life, too! :-)

    Nathaniel - Newborn Portraits

    T
here is nothing that makes me happier as a business owner than repeat clients. Nathaniel's parents are just that. I still vividly remember the first time I met Samantha's parents at the Lake Placid Bridal show in 2006. I had only been in the area for about a year, and at that point, I had only photographed maybe five weddings just over a year and a half into trying out the whole starting-a-photography-business (only about a month or two full-time at that point). Samantha's dad asked me some interesting questions about digital photography (which was still fairly young at that point). I could tell they were smart, and I prayed they thought I knew what I was talking about. haha! Pretty much every wedding I booked in 2006, I consider a miracle (all 17 of them), but Samantha & Dave's wedding was a special miracle. Not just that they hired me, but that I was given the honor to photograph and be a part of their wedding day (I should add, Chris was also part of this). Their wedding was on our very first anniversary. Thank God we were given such a gracious and joyous family to be with on our special day! Sam's dad even told us where to go for dinner afterwards (their wedding was early and we had time to go out to dinner afterward). Anyway, I could go on and on and on about this lovely couple and their lovely families, but that might get boring to everyone else. So, I will just say... I am once again so honored to photograph their growing family. And, I hope to keep sharing over the course of this year, images of them as their new son grows and changes. Happy viewing, friends!

just for fun... engagement pic... "first comes..."

    a wedding pic... "then comes..."

"and then comes BABY!" (sweet yawns)

Samantha (& Dave) both are always so filled with joy. Saturday was no different.

I just love the sleepy newborn stage. Sure, they don't do much, and sure, they usually barely open their eyes. But, how sweet is this?!

    love this one!

i love baby toes. a lot.

    there are some baby blues!

so, i loved the pattern of this chair so much that I had to grab a few of the sweet baby on it, but unfortunately, Nathaniel didn't agree. :-) I almost hesitate to put crying pictures on my blog because I don't want parents to think that is all I got (because babies aren't always super psyched to get their pictures taken). But, I couldn't pass on this one.

    all better!

love the sweetness of this next one. also... I love Nathaniel's newborn hair.

Samantha's parents have a place on Brant Lake (where they were married), and it was a buzzing place. I had to grab a few wide shots to show the family love.

... and just for fun... the last time I was on this porch, this is what was happening... :-)

and, one to close... Nathaniel's sweet cousin Aiden. How cute is he?!

Thanks again, Sam & Dave! It was such a treat to see you again; this time as parents! Can't wait to watch Nathaniel grow!

    Ryden - Baby Portraits

    R
yden is about eight months old, which is quite possibly the "perfect" age for a baby portrait. If you aren't able to do the full baby's first year package (with 3 or more sessions starting with newborn), then having your baby's portrait captured between 6-9 months is ideal... just after they sit up on their own and maybe just as they are learning to crawl or not yet crawling. Ryden is a crawler already, but fortunately, I could keep up without too much running and diving. ;-) And, of course, we HAD to throw in the parents for some shots, as I just LOVE showing the relational aspect of my client's lives. I am so glad that we also chose to do this session at their house. I think just about every parent wonders if they should go to a park or some "pretty" place, but really (and especially for babies), your home is where the most sentiment will be tied, where your baby is most comfortable... and maybe someday when you move or upgrade your house, you will have special images at a place that carries many memories. I honestly regret not having a professional (other than myself and Chris) come into our house in Saranac Lake before we moved to capture the three of us, but I am so glad that we got what we did. Anyway, rambling... I had a great time with Ryden and his parents, and I had a tough tough time narrowing these down for you all. Happy viewing, friends!

... about 5 minutes after I arrived... couldn't help myself, even though he wasn't "ready" yet. :-)

love love love capturing a baby in his/her nursery!

sweetness! didn't even really plan mom being in purple on the purple side and Ryden being in yellow, on the yellow side, but it is perfect!

    love his nook!

and a few in front of the house...

    sweet boy!

i love baby eyelashes! they always seem so long and lush!

oh, and this is the prime age for lots of raspberries. LOVE the bubbles! haha!

    curious. :-) love it!

okay, i have to admit that I didn't get this image to focus where I wanted it to (his foot), but I still LOVE every other thing about this image.

    perfect family portrait.

there is something so sweet and gentle about this image.

    aaaaannnnd, he's off!

Ryden loved doing this! it was so cute!

and a few on the (parked) boat to close. he has his eye on the cup holders. loves those things! :-)

Thanks so much to the Perry family in Saranac Lake! I had such a great time with you three!!

Ella - Wayne, PA Toddler Portraits

    E
lla's portrait session yesterday in Wayne was supposed to be all about her, but I (admittedly) like to capture relationships within a family instead of just how pretty a child is... so... it was my goal to grab a few of this lil tot with her parents. Well, as all mothers and fathers with kids over the age of walking know, this task is easier said than done, but all it takes is encouraging parents to play with their kid... and usually, I grab something/s worth looking at of all the parties. So, with that said, happy viewing, friends!

I decided we should try right off the bat to get one of all three... Ella thought that was a pretty funny idea. (timing FAIL for this session- haha!)

but... this worked nicely... how beautiful is this lil girl! seriously?!

i know this is not the happiest of faces (she was literally trying to figure out what in the world I was doing), but Ella's mom pointed out to me that she makes a serious face often... it should be captured. :-)

    sweetness!

    a few bubbles!

... or not? (it wasn't working too well, but Ella loved the wand anyhow).

dads are the best at playing!

    mid-getting-down, but still sweet nonetheless.

    little hands...

as a mom of a toddler, i fully appreciate the cuteness of baby shoes and watching a little one walking in them.

I love the way little toddlers squat to do things on the ground... such as drawing with sidewalk chalk.

Ella and I were playing with the "helicopters."

every mom needs an image like this with her children.

thanks so much, Ella! you are a beautiful lil model, and I look forward to more sessions as you grow!

    Eloise - Newborn Portraits

    T
he trip I had planned last week to North Carolina was all for my new sweet niece Eloise... and, of course, her daddy (my brother) and mommy. Sweet Eloise came into this world a few weeks later than we expected. While that was most uncomfortable for my sister-in-law, I was a bit excited that the time I would be around would be right in her perfect window for true newborn portraits (5-10 days old). Sorry, Katy, don't hate me. :-) Anyway, I am SO excited that my big brother is a dad. It is so fun to watch him with Eloise, and I look forward to watching her grow and get big enough to play with her fun cousin. But, enough babbling... on to some sweet images of a sweet baby girl (again, couldn't narrow it down real well). Happy viewing, friends!

    sweet little family...

    my sister-in-law is so beautiful.

    love this one!

this is probably my favorite. Eloise crosses her ankles all the time... must've done it in the womb.

    favorite daddy-daughter pic.

love these colors! (i really regret not getting a picture of Claire all swaddled up like a burrito).

    love the neutral tones.

the next two are about the same, but i love the two different tones...

    sweet fingers!

Katy was laughing that the first image I got of her kissing Eloise, she looked like she did NOT like her mom's kisses. ha!

    love sweet baby hair...

    LOVE this!

    sweet profile.

    sugar lips.

Congrats David & Katy! I love you three so much!
